Import Your Documents
Bring documents you already have into Fable and edit them with AI. Fable imports:
- Word documents (.docx)
- PDF files (.pdf)
- Markdown files (.md)
- Plain text files (.txt)
One file becomes one document in your project.
How to Import
Open a project
Start the import
Add your files
Keep working
An empty project or empty document also shows a drop area, so you can drag files straight in.
What's Kept
Fable keeps all of your text and the structure around it:
- Headings and paragraphs
- Tables
- Bulleted and numbered lists
- Bold and italic text
- Block quotes
- Images
Scanned PDFs are run through text recognition so you get editable text. Images inside a scanned PDF aren't imported. Plain-text files are imported as text, with simple heading detection.
Good to Know
- Owners and editors can import. Importing uses the project owner's credits, like other AI work in the project.
- If a file can't be imported โ for example, it's empty, it isn't really the format its extension says, or it's too long โ Fable adds a short document to the project explaining what went wrong. Very long files can be split into smaller files and imported separately.
- Need a quick conversion without importing? Try the free converters at fable.la/tools, such as PDF to Markdown and Word to Markdown.
Export Anywhere
Export your work in five formats:
- Markdown (.md)
- Plain text (.txt)
- Word document (.docx)
- PDF (.pdf)
- Web page (.html)
How to Export
Click the Export project button (the download icon) in the editor header. In the dialog, choose:
- Current document โ exports the document you have open as one file
- All documents โ exports every document in the project into a new folder, one file per document
Files are saved to a Fable Exports folder in your home folder by default; click Browse to pick another folder. Exports stay on your machine โ nothing is uploaded anywhere.
The first PDF export takes a little longer while Fable prepares its PDF engine.
What's Kept
Word exports keep headings, paragraphs, bulleted, numbered and task lists, block quotes, code blocks, tables and horizontal rules. Markdown exports match your document as written. Plain text has no formatting.
Anyone in a project โ owners, editors and viewers โ can export.
Just need a printable copy? The Print button in the editor header turns the current document into a PDF and opens it.
