Project Assistant

Ask questions across every document in a project. The assistant reads and searches your documents, answers in plain language, and proposes edits you approve in one click.

What the Assistant Does

Every project has an assistant that knows all of its documents, not just the one you have open. Ask it anything about your project โ€” "Where did we describe the pricing tiers?", "Which sections still mention the old launch date?", "Summarize what changed in the onboarding chapter" โ€” and it reads and searches your documents to answer.

While it works, you can see what it's doing: which documents it read and what it searched for. Each answer ends with a short line listing the documents it read, so you know where the answer came from.

Opening the Assistant

There are two ways in:

  • Click Project assistant ("Ask anything about this project") at the top of the documents sidebar
  • Click Ask your project in the editor header

The conversation opens in place of the editor. Type your question and press Enter to send (Shift+Enter adds a new line). You can also click the mic button to speak your question โ€” Fable transcribes it on your computer and puts the text in the box so you can check it before sending.

Your conversation is kept per project, and follow-up questions build on what you asked before.

Proposed Changes

The assistant can do more than answer. When you ask for a change โ€” "Rename Thompson to Richards in every document", "Add a short FAQ document based on the support notes" โ€” it proposes it as a Suggested changes card. A proposal can include:

  • Edits to existing documents, shown as diffs
  • New documents
  • Document renames

Review the card, then click Make these changes to apply the whole proposal in one click, or No thanks to dismiss it. Applied changes land in each document's edit history with attribution, so you can undo them like any other edit. If a document changed after the proposal was made, the card tells you which changes couldn't be applied.

The assistant never changes your documents on its own. Nothing is applied until someone clicks Make these changes.

Who Can Use It

Everyone in a project can open the assistant and ask questions. Only owners and editors can apply its proposed changes; viewers see the proposal but can't apply it.

Credits

Asking the assistant uses the credits of the person asking. Applying a proposal doesn't cost anything extra. See Billing & Credits for how credits work.

Tips

  • Be specific about scope. "In the Q3 report, ..." gets a faster answer than a question about everything.
  • Ask for smaller changes if a big one times out. Very large requests can take too long; splitting them up works better.
  • Use the editor for single-document edits. For a quick change to the document you're looking at, type or speak an instruction in the editor instead.
