DOCX to Markdown Converter

Convert a .docx file to a .md file in seconds. The output is GitHub-flavored Markdown with headings, lists, links, emphasis and tables, ready for a README, a docs site, a notes app or an AI prompt. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Want to edit it with AI? Fable imports Word, PDF and Markdown, lets you tell the AI what to change, and shows every edit.

How it works

  1. Drop a .docx file onto the box above, or choose one from your computer.
  2. Your browser unpacks the .docx and converts its structure: heading styles to # headings, lists to - and 1. items, tables to pipe tables, and bold, italics and links to their Markdown syntax.
  3. Copy the Markdown, or download it as a .md file named after your document.

Private by design: your file is converted on your device and is never uploaded. The conversion runs inside this browser tab with no server step, and your file isn't saved anywhere. Close the tab and it's gone.

Limitations

  • Older binary .doc files can’t be read. Save them as .docx in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice first.
  • Embedded images are left out of the .md file.
  • Comments, tracked changes, headers, footers, footnotes and text boxes are not converted.
  • Only text with a heading style becomes a Markdown heading. Large bold text without a heading style stays a paragraph.
  • Markdown tables hold one line per cell, so merged cells and multi-paragraph cells are flattened.

Frequently asked questions

What Markdown flavor does it produce?
GitHub-flavored Markdown: standard Markdown plus pipe tables and strikethrough. It works on GitHub and GitLab, in most docs tools and in most notes apps.
Is my .docx file uploaded?
No. The file is converted inside this browser tab on your device. It is never sent to a server and it is not saved anywhere.
Why did a heading come out as bold text?
The converter reads Word’s heading styles. If the heading was made by making text bigger and bold rather than applying Heading 1, 2 or 3, apply the heading style in Word and convert again.
Where do the images go?
They are left out, because a .md file holds only text. Save the images separately if you need them alongside the Markdown.
Is there a file limit?
No. Convert as many files as you like, one at a time, free.
